Ahmadinejad's Recommendation

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continued his verbal assault on Israel - and in doing so showed more of his bigotry and hatred for the only successful democracy in the Middle East.

"Some European countries insist on saying that during World War II, Hitler burned millions of Jews and put them in concentration camps," Ahmadinejad said. "Any historian, commentator or scientist who doubts that is taken to prison or gets condemned."

"Let's give some land to the Zionists in Europe or in Germany or Austria, so they can have their government there," he said. "They faced injustice in Europe, so why do the repercussions fall on the Palestinians? Offer a piece of land from Europe, and we will back this decision and will not attack this government."

"Those who are occupying and ruling Jerusalem, what is the origin of their fathers? ... Most of them have no roots in Palestine, but they are holding the destiny of Palestine in their hands and allow themselves to kill the Palestinian people," he said.

Most interesting, I thought, where the differences between the Arabic and the English versions of Al-Jazeera's website. The English version is quite clear that the Holocaust really happened, and that it involved the killing of millions. The Arabic version is more ambiguous on that point. This is my post attempting to parse the Arabic version.

To add a note to my comment above, I think that is it ironic that the United Nations recently called on members to combat Holocaust denial. Printing articles like the English version of Al-Jazeera's report on this in Arabic would be a step in the right direction. The Arabic version wasn't inaccurate, but the presentation and focus was entirely different. Those who read Al-Jazeera's English website should be aware that although it gives a general tenor of the channel's reporting, it is often spun a different way in Arabic. Ironically, there were some student protests in Tehren yesterday against the regime, but unfortunately Ahmadinejad's continuing purge of anyone not a hardcore supporter of the regime is leaving them with little leverage. I do really agree with - Iranian President Muhammad Ahmadi-Nejad Suggests a Jewish State in Germany or Austria.
